This week we got the cameras out and a friend of mine came round to start documenting the JoshingTalk Submersible project as it gets closer and closer to it’s finale!

This includes the ins and outs, the highs and lows and the general flow of the project from different points of views. It also offers a new way for people to follow the project rather than reading about it and you can finally put faces to the names I’ve been going on about.

Clips to follow….

Oh and holding the thought of using media to document happenings, check out my new website and venture- www.yehangout.com

YE (Young Entrepreneurs) Hangout is a platform for young people to meet, chat and network through the medium of Google Hangouts purely with a WiFi connection, a webcam and a microphone. Perfect for the cash strapped entrepreneur….to help turn them into entrepreneurs strapped with cash!

I thought I’d let you know what I’m up to this Monday. I’m attempting to cycle from London to Brighton with fellow adventurers Dave Cornthwaite and Squash Falconer.

Now that sounds impressive by itself but take a closer look at the whole project and you will find that both Dave and Squash are planning to ride a good 3,000 miles across Europe on a rather unusual looking form of transport- the EliptiGo. Have a look: thegotrek.moonfruit.com

Not only are they doing this to raise money for a good cause but also because they can. And because they can, it screams the message loud and clear that anyone can. Sharing this same message through my projects is one of the reasons I’m proud to be an ambassador for Dave’s Say Yes More scheme and willing to put my arse through the 100 mile round trip tomorrow.

The interesting part being that I haven’t been cycling for a good few months and when I last went out, it was a mere couple of miles around the local town….

To Be Continued

Last week, I had an email from the people at Papernomad asking if I’d like to try out one of their products. I said yes and passed on my shipping address and by the time I had hit reply- I had a brand new Papernomad designed for my MacBook already in my hands. Well not quite that fast but the shipping was super sonic!

‘Papernomad are a group of designers, marketing professionals and artists with a passion to question existing systems and design sustainable solutions with respect to social and environmental issues. They design and manufacture bags for mobile electronic devices – created to meet the needs of modern nomads: Identity, Sustainability, Sanity.’

So finally, something for the creative doers out there who just have that urge to doodle on every surface available. When an idea strikes, you need to get it down somewhere and if like me, you carry your laptop everywhere, then a Papernomad is perfect for this. However, I decided I wanted to capture the stories of not just myself, but other people who cross my path. So for the last week, I’ve been passing the Papernomad around and getting fellow friends to leave their mark.

Designed with the English weather in mind, the Papernomad is waterproof and very durable giving the rain no chance of washing away your latest scribble. It’s simple but well thought through and I can’t wait to see how it looks a few weeks, months or even 10 years from now….if it’s still around! It’s biodegradable- yet another important and impressive feature.

Lyn from Fringe Arts very kindly offered to frame it and what an absolutely amazing job she has done of it. Unfortunately the colours of the canvas are likely to fade over time but somehow I feel content with that. After all, Mother Nature was the master behind the piece of art and if she intended on it fading, then so be it. Luckily, I made high quality copies of the print that you can buy here.
Now I intend to display the art at a gallery alongside its video for many more people to appreciate!

Tuesday this week took Trident Sensors and I down to the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton for the Ocean Business Show, which was fantastic. We networked, Trident met with friends old and new and I did a lot of head nodding when it came to talking about the high-tech equipment they are pioneering for the future of marine business.

Interestingly though, there were a lot of people intrigued by what I was doing. Despite going in their with my ‘two fingers up’ attitude to being able to do stuff only if you have qualifications and a 130+ IQ level, they were very accepting and agreeable on my approach to the submersible project!

I finally met with RS Aqua who are the lovely guys donating the actual submersible that will make the journey to over 8,500 meters down. This smooth glass sphere of around 7 inches in diameter will withstand pressures of such immensity and experience the wrath of the ocean giants (and dwarfs) that will come its way.
Thanks guys- by giving me a contraption that resists pressure, you have also given me a reason to take the pressure off of myself!

This week I have-

Taken the JoshingTalk Space Art to be framed (all in good time!) at Fringe Arts. Lyn is a lovely, enthusiastic person with a multitude of experience in art framing and has taught students from all around the world! I can’t wait to show you the finished product.

Got myself a speaking agent! I’m now represented by Room 54, a top London talent agency with a fantastic all round selection of celebrities, young entrepreneurs, Olympians, adventurers and whichever category I fit into….
Yay! More chances to share my work with others!

Got tickets to the Ocean Business show at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton for next Tuesday. I’ll be going along with the team from Trident Sensors and getting hands-on with some top ocean technology and making links wherever possible!

Made a conscious effort to connect with at least 10 new people this week….and succeeded! Some of them show passion for collaboration, others were simply small talk on Twitter. All of them are potentially helpful in some way or another and all of them now know about me. How long before something comes up that prompts them or I to think about our new born connection we made and make something powerful grow from it?

Tie all of these points in with a constant flow of emails and phone calls and you’re beginning to understand what kind of structure (if any) I seem to have in my week.
Ahhhh here’s to the weekend being on a Monday and Tuesday!! Yeah. Likely.

In my quest to meet more and more people, I made a connection (once again) through Twitter with a chap named Dave Cornthwaite. Dave is an enthusiastic and passionate adventurer who immediately inspired me when I saw what he has been up to and also, what his plans were for the future!
I remember the day when as a kid I swam one width of my local swimming pool, roughly 15 metres and was proud to have a certificate confirming my achievement. This begs the question, what kind of certificate do you get for swimming 1,001 miles down the Missouri River? Only Dave knows the answer as he did exactly this back in August last year.

I probably picked the best time to manage a chat over Skype with him as he is currently prepping for his next challenge and it won’t be long before he’s attempting to cycle 3,000 miles around Western Europe on an EliptiGo….

As we talked, we both realised that we have a lot in common, not only with our ground breaking projects but also, the ethics and philosophy of what we do. It seems we both are out there, doing stuff as any other person could with concrete proof that it can be done if you just say yes and do it.
Dave founded Say Yes More with the intent of making this happen and I couldn’t say no (pun intended) when he asked me to be an ambassador for the scheme! In true Dave style, he very swiftly sent a couple of t-shirts and a cap through the post and within a day or so I had them in my hands proving that, when it comes to getting things done and just doing it, it’s sometimes as simple as getting something through the post. No mean feat in this country….

I’ll wear my passion with pride through the Say Yes More apparel and look forward to joining Dave with future projects around the planet as we both fight for the human right of daring to dream and then doing it. Yes.

This week brought a lot of new insights into the JoshingTalk Submersible project, however I wanted to tell you about one in particular that fascinated me and really bit the bullet when it comes to the theory of networking and coincidence.

Last week I was invited to do a talk for the Chiddingfold Society. A group situated no more than 5 minutes down the road from where I live. It was great fun! I talked about my projects, my journey and my ambitions and was treated to nibbles and a glass of wine afterwards. Brilliant- yet another group of people who were fascinated by my passion and had had an enjoyable evening. Job done.
Or so I thought.

It just so turned out that, in the front row of the audience, a gentleman named Sir Anthony Laughton sat listening intrigued by what I had to say about the JoshingTalk Submersible project. Sir Anthony had in fact developed pretty much the first ever deep-sea camera back in the 1950′s and consequently became the director of the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, one of the key players in global oceanography. He dedicated his career to this industry and is heroic to say the least in his scientific discoveries.

Wow. Here I am trying to be one of the first guys ever to get footage of the deepest Atlantic ocean trench with an amateur submersible and talking to me was one of the first guys ever to get footage of the sea floor. Anywhere. In the world.

Needless to say, I was stunned and nearly choked on my wild salmon canape as I digested what I had just heard. What’s more, I was invited over to Sir Anthony’s house where I had one of the most interesting and captivating science lessons in my life.
Looking through archives of Sir Anthony’s pictures and reports has given me the inspiration boost to keep plugging away at this project.
You may have seen the new JoshingTalk Submersible progress bar on the right….yep, so close yet so far.

We are but a matter of 5% away from launch. It’s within touching distance! Something I’m sure Sir Anthony can relate to on many occasions.
